City Farmers Amsterdam

A phenomenon that we’ve seen in the media, but now has been realized in the beautiful city of Amsterdam: City Farmers (in Dutch Stadsboeren).

Initiated by friends of ours, every citizen can buy 1m2 crate to cultivate healthy vegetables and possibly fruits. A great project that needs all the support and awareness. One to stay and not just a hype.

The initiative will be supported by several events throughout Spring and Summer, backed by a cafe/ bar, music around a fireplace and much more.

To all Amsterdam people, apply and register for your own ‘little city garden’. Place a comment on their website, www.stadboeren.org and they’ll get back to you with further details. Definitely come and visit over the weekend, this will be the spot of the summer, for sure.

We’re up next, arranging a crate as we speak and will visit our little city garden every weekend.

Keep Calm & Carry On

Spotted via lifestyle platform Ajanaku, we found this in particular very worthwhile to share… since we love storytelling.
A story of a poster, a typeface, a mean to communicate with people that are in need of support and hope in difficult times.

This as an example that shows how strong copy can be and what a simple message and use of medium can achieve.
As the moderator points out rightfully so, even in today’s world:
enchanting words…
a voice out of history…
a warm-hearted message…
to inspire confidence in hard times…
something that should never fade out of fashion…

We already ordered some posters and can’t wait to get them delivered.

A Take On Kony

Who hasn’t seen the Kony 2012 video? How could you even miss out on it?
There are some people that not even bother watching something that has been shared more than 5 times by their digital friends. An anti-response to short-term hypes, bursts of intense communication, merely because we consume, quickly digest and forget.

I did watch it, but didn’t share it.

Why? I felt that I needed to digest the impact it had on me.
And then this huge Tsunami of criticism started to enter the digital space, which in the following paragraph will not exposed to unnecessary name-dropping.

Renowned media channels questioning the authenticity and sincerity of the Invisible Children. Newspapers highlighting who they’ve been talking to at what time each day. Researching, contacting, validating sources, interviewing locals, all questioning what’s true or false.
And bloggers, trying to create contra-movements of why people should by no means support the Kony 2012 campaign. Points of discussion: The amount of money that actually goes to Uganda’s youth and education, the fact that Kony has lost power over the years, that this campaign will only stagnate the current rising developments of the country and last but not least the way of communication (americanism & tone-of-voice).

It took me a few more times watching the movie, to finally write and respond to all the above.

1. You surely can say something about the style of the documentary. It’s called taste.
2. And you’re probably right on some facts, that circumstances have improved in a country such as Uganda. Only but good news.
3. The tactics used are traditional: Invisible Children asks us for donations, celebrities are mobilized to spread the word even faster and validate the story. How often does a charity/NGO asks us to do the same thing without knowing where it all really goed to? What did you do with the Tsunami or Haiti?
How often do you really really know what’s been shared on the internet, newspapers and television are that honest, factual and based on the truth and nothing but the truth?

This campaign is about capturing Kony, same as all other brutal criminals that the world unfortunately keeps. This is merely one example of an larger umbrella: social awareness.
What have you been doing to make your surrounding better? In what way are you meaningful to this planet?
It’s always easier to respond to something, but what are your social actions?
Wouldn’t this be an ultimate sign of ‘power to the people, power to the masses’ as a proof that we collectively can let the earth we stand on shake? Even for future reference and use, these movements are efficient, for whatever will be on the agenda?

And yes, for some of us this is a way to feel better and the majority will just wait for something to happen. But what’s new? With an enormous collective of likeminded socially aware people, we only need a few that take our hand and make something happen. Let us make feel more responsible of our own and other peoples actions. Have a say and step up!

Invisible children are exactly doing that. You might disagree with the topic, but they are an example of turning awareness into action. Not an NGO, but a social venture, where people, planet and profit go hand-in-hand. Yes, they do make money, because they live in a Western world of bureaucracy, energy bills, business expenses and sons they want give a great future. Not an equal playing field, but those are the standards the world has shaped over the last centuries.

I, as founder of NoRabbitInTheHat, support the Kony 2012 campaign and their inventers Invisible Children. From out Amsterdam we will continue building awareness and shout for action. We ofcourse have our own ideas of creating, stimulating social awareness and its actions, but we have a shared belief, mission and goal we want to grasp.

To all others out there that will not support the initiative: we’re looking forward to see more or hear about your project/actions, even as ideas for the right way forward as you see it.

A new brand, a new product has been born in January 2012.
Three professionals with a background in product design, fashion design and production have joined forces to create IKKU.

The name IKKU derives from a Japanese word ‘coming and going’, since they’re conscious of where it’s been made and to whom it will go. As they call it: future-friendly.

The product looks amazing and we’re at a point of buying our first recycled denim laptop sleeve.

Amsterdam Fashion Week

Just as we returned from Berlin, the Amsterdam Fashion had kicked off. With its Fashion Fair ‘Modefabriek’, we visited the Fashion Forward initiative MINT. A fair-in-a-fair was hosting an area dedicated to sustainable fashion brands and labels. An enormous success and they’ve done a great job. Enthusiasm and lots of free-PR have put them on the map.

Secondly, we have been invited for the Cold Method Fashion Show. Lots of celebrities lined up at the front row, the show lasted only for some 7minutes. Very short, but the party afterwards and free beers were very welcoming.
